Sugar Wax (Review)

So what's the difference between sugar wax and traditional wax?

Sugar wax is made from natural ingredients and it sticks to and removes hair without attaching to live skin.  The traditional waxing process removes the top layer of live skin (ouch!), which makes it more painful and irritating.

I was very surprised to learn that sugar waxing (sugaring or Persian waxing) is a method of hair removal that has been in use since 1900 BC, even by the likes of Cleopatra!  How have I not I heard of this before now?!

Anyways, as a bonus, sugaring does remove dead skin cells, so your skin is exfoliated as it's being waxed.  Sugaring paste is also hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic, so it's ideal for those with sensitive skin.

Sugaring can extract much shorter hair (1/8 inch) than traditional wax (1/4 inch).  Since such short hair can be removed, it is possible to extract the hair in the early growth phase, which can lead to permanency, which means less overall hair growing back!  The sugaring technique removes hair in the direction of natural growth, which means you are less likely to experience those dreaded ingrown hairs.  It's important to note that traditional wax is better suited for areas where precision is key, like for shaping the eyebrow.

I recently had my arms sugar waxed at Sugar Me Wax in Scottsdale.  I have been getting my eyebrows waxed for 10+ years, but this was the first time I tried hair removal on my arms.  The sugaring process was slightly uncomfortable the first time, but I noticed it hurt dramatically less the second time.  The treatments were four weeks apart.  I've heard trimming the hair before sugaring, if it's a longer then 1/8 inches, can make it hurt less, as well.  I look forward to seeing if I have less overall hair growth as a result of sugar waxing.  And I loooove having silky smooth arms!

If you currently receive waxing services or have been considering waxing, I highly encourage you to check out sugaring.  If you live in Scottsdale, Phoenix or the surrounding area, you should definitely go to Sugar Me Wax (locations in DC Ranch, Old Town & Biltmore).  Their aestheticians are highly experienced and go out of their way to ensure you feel comfortable.  Sugar Me Wax’s locations are also exceptionally clean and lovely!  Mention "Love50" when booking to get 50% off your first sugaring appointment!

While you're there, be sure to ask for a complimentary skin consultation.  They offer skincare services (facials, peels, etc.) and carry several great skincare product lines (more on that in another post).  I also just had my eyebrows microbladed by Layne, the co-founder and CEO, and I'm beyond excited with my results.  I'll share more with you on that soon, as well!
